The Tours to and from Canada After World War Two

Page history last edited by Patrick Adams 14 years, 7 months ago

1951 MCC Tour

The MCC covered all the expenses of a tour designed to give Canadian cricket a much needed shot in the arm after the War. All the games were played on matting wickets, negating both the importance of the toss and the opening bowlers.

The game against Canada in Toronto on 8-10 September was the inaugural first-class match on Canadian soil. In this game the Canadian umpire Frederick Heather no-balled the Canadian bowler Padmore six times in the first four overs. Presumably for a suspect action.

1954 Canadian Tour of Britain

Led by Hal Robinson, a former Oxford Blue. The team relied on players who had immigrated from Britain, West Indies and Australia. They played 18 games, won 4, lost 3 and drew 11.

1959 MCC Tour

This was under the captaincy of Denis Silk and commemorated the centenary of the first international tour led by George Parr.

1964 Yorkshire Tour

The Yorkshire Cricket Team, including John Hampshire, Ray Illingworth and Geoffrey Boycott toured Canada in 1964.

1976 Derrick Robins Tour

This tour included the following cricketers on the threshold of their careers: Bill Athey, Paul Downton, Mike Gatting, David Gower, Vic Marks and Chris Tavare. Whilst efforts were made to make these young players feel as welcome as their predecessors the tour was marred by anti-apartheid protestors who objected to Derrick Robins' South African connections. 62 protestors were arrested at Edmonton.
