By 1860 a dispute regarding selection had led to the setting up of a rival series, as players from Montreal felt they were being unfairly overlooked. It became clear that the team from Montreal could not put up a competitive side against the Americans, as they were defeated by an innings and 45 runs in August 1860 and the rival series was short-lived.
