Colonel NW Wallace

Colonel NW Wallace, was the brainchild behind the Halifax Tournament of 1874. He stated "I can't say I was impressed at first sight either with the ground at Halifax, when I visited it in the spring of 1871, as it presented the usual ploughed field appearance, or with the civilian cricket I witnessed afterwards."(p.124 60 years of Canadian cricket) He described civilian team was being "always overmatched by the military, or combined naval and military teams."(p.124 ibid.)

He also stated "Upper Canada cricket, taken all round, was far superior to any that I was likely to see at Halifax."(p.124 ibid.)

On 18 July 1889 FA Kaiser and FAW Taylor scored an unbeaten partnership of 252 for Halifax Wanderers v Navy; a Canadian record.

Following the recall of the British Army and Navy to Europe in 1880s, cricket in Halifax went into decline.
