ICC Associate Membership and Modern International Cricket

Page history last edited by Patrick Adams 14 years, 5 months ago

ICC

Canada was awarded ICC Associate status in 1968.

In 1979 Canada unexpectedly [ref Winnipeg Tribune 1971] finished as runnner-up to Sri Lanka in the ICC Trophy a competition for those teams in the second tier of international cricket. This allowed Canada entry into the first ever cricket World Cup. Once again the difference in playing ability between Canada and test playing nations was exposed as the Canadians were soundly beaten by Australia, England and Pakistan.

Representing Canada

In the mid 20th century, the standards were lower as there were fewer professionals, thus making it easier to develop a team that could compete at international level, especially against sides below the top tier. But the Packer revolution in the late 70s meant that more cricketers could make a living from the game and those at the very top could earn the amounts we now expect sport stars to be awarded. This in turn gave far greater rewards for those who played international cricket, so more players competed under a flag of convenience. For example the Australian Davison was born in Canada. He played first-class cricket in Australia but was not good enough to play for the national team. He offered his services to Canada and so got to play in two World Cups.
