How Cricket Clubs from Toronto and New York created the International Series in the 1840s

In 1840 a game was arranged between Toronto Cricket Club and the New York based St George’s Club. This led to the start of the International Series between Canada and the United States which commenced in 1844.

 

When the St George’s Club arrived in Toronto the home club were not expecting them, possibly due to a hoax perpetrated on the New York team, or more probably due to poor communication and a misunderstanding.

 

Following another dispute it was finally agreed in 1844 that two teams calling themselves Canada and the United States would meet on the cricket field. During the early years the majority of the two teams were still selected from the St George's Club and the Toronto Cricket Club, but the decision taken in 1844 allowed the participation of players from other local clubs and then into a true international fixture. 6. July 19-20 1854 at Toronto, Canada won by 10 wickets.

7. September 11-12 1856 at Hoboken, US won by 9 wickets.

8. August 19-21 1857 at Toronto, Canada won by 7 wickets.

9. August 2-4 1858 at Hoboken, US won by 4 wickets.

10. August 3-4 1859 at Toronto, US won by 4 wickets.

11. August 6-7 1860 at Hoboken, US won by 5 wickets.

12. August 28-9 1865 at Toronto, US won by 1 wicket.
