Australian 1893 Tour

Page history last edited by Patrick Adams 14 years, 6 months ago

Following their tour of England the 1893 Australians returned home via North America, where they played twice against Philadelphia, once against New York, Detroit and Massachusetts. They also played one game against Canada, which was their penultimate match before the final game against Detroit.

Canada lost by an innings and 70 runs, but they competed on level terms and reached treble figures in both innings. JM Laing hit an unbeaten 43 in the second innings, but he failed to take a single wicket in his 31 four ball overs. In contrast WH Cooper took 4 for 50 in his 27.3 overs. The Australian innings of 298 included 59 extras of which 42 were byes. Their number 10 batsman A Connington top scored with 69, with the last two wickets adding 110.

The Australians played all their North American games against the odds, with the exception of the matches against Canada and the Philadelphians. The Austrailians lost only one game, against the Philadelphians who won by an innings and 68 runs after amassing a mammoth score of 525 in their only innings. The Australians beat them by 6 wickets in their second match.
